NASCAR Likely to Postpone NextGen Car Until 2022

After some pressure from certain teams in the NASCAR Cup Series garage, manufactures like Toyota, and the Race Team Alliance, NASCAR could make an announcement later this week about a possible postponement for the new NASCAR Cup Series NextGen race car until 2022 due to lack of preparedness from COVID-19.

There have already been three scheduled tests that have been canceled in the months of March and April (Atlanta, Bristol, Talladega).

“Candidly, I think as an industry, our priority right now needs to be in salvaging and recovering our racing season that we’ve pressed pause right in the middle of,” Dave Wilson, President of Toyota Racing Development, told RACER.com.

Chad Kanus, crew chief on the #24 for William Byron suggested that the teams race the original race car in 2021, with a few one off races in the new NextGen car. Something similar NASCAR did with the Car of Tomorrow in 2007.
