Former ARCA Menards Series Driver Buck Newland Dies at 79

Driving Fords fielded out of his shop near Dayton, Ohio, Newland was an annual competitor at ARCA’s season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway, finishing 11th in 1970, 10th in 1976, ninth in 1974 and seventh in 1971 in a race won by Iggy Katona.

Buck Newland, who drove in the ARCA Menards Series from 1967-79, died April 12, 2022, at the age of 79.

Driving Fords fielded out of his shop near Dayton, Ohio, Newland was an annual competitor at ARCA’s season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway, finishing 11th in 1970, 10th in 1976, ninth in 1974 and seventh in 1971 in a race won by Iggy Katona.

His other top ARCA finishes were eighth at Lorain County Speedway in 1978, ninth at Flat Rock Speedway in 1974 and his best career ARCA finish of fourth at Flat Rock in 1978. He finished 20th in 1978 in ARCA championship points.

Newland also drove on the USAC Stock Car circuit at Michigan International Speedway, the Milwaukee Mile and Pocono Raceway in 1971.

After retiring from driving, Newland became a member of the Jack Bowsher & Associates ARCA team, which fielded Fords for Jack’s sons Bobby and Todd Bowsher, winning races and championships in the 1990s. Newland attended the Racer Reunion Saturday, April 9 at Toledo Speedway.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, April 19, from 5-8 p.m. and services Wednesday, April 20, at 11 a.m. at Jones Kenney Zachman Funeral Home, 1002 East High Street, Springfield, Ohio, 45505.
